Choosing Wisely® Reveals Surprising Results

Choosing Wisely® recently conducted a survey through SHARP Consumer Research, and has created an infographic to display the results. A total of 1,020 of those surveyed responded to various questions about how they, as patients, make health care decisions. While some results were predictable, others were surprising. Here are two of the results that were unexpected.

Researching condition

More than 92% said they would be very or somewhat likely to research their condition before their doctor visit. Of those, only 22.92% said they would turn to their health care provider for this information. The rest chose online search tools (42.5%) or WebMD (34.57%).

This means the great majority of patients are navigating the often frightening and sometimes erroneous world of internet diagnosis. The solution is to make yourself – or a qualified staff member – available to patients to talk them through their concerns and create a plan of action. For all HFMG/employed physicians and HFPN private practice providers who use Epic, you can also direct your patients to the My Care Advice Line, staffed 24/7 by experienced registered nurses who can access the patient’s medical record and offer overarching advice for no charge. The phone number is 844-262-1949.
