Benefits Overview

Every year we get distributed a Professional Development Fund. This is $300 per year in the PGY-1 & 2 years (paid in a lump sum at the start of residency) and $1250 per year in the subsequent years. This money can be used for non-participatory conferences, books, iPad purchase program, and other items on the acceptable list as defined by the Graduate Medical Education Office.

Each year we are also given an allowance to be spent on conferences/meetings. PGY-1 & 2 years are allotted $1250 each year for travel. Anything greater than the $1250 is considered a personal expense. PGY-3 and above are allotted two $1250 conferences and one $950 conference. All conferences must be participatory conferences or residents will be required to use their PDF’s or take it as a personal expense.

We get some money each year on our badges for food. The Biggby Coffee and Subway are open 24 hours a day!

Our insurance includes the following: full medical, dental, vision coverage (resident shares cost and deductions are taken pre-tax from paycheck). There is also optional AD&D, disability, pre-tax flexible spending account and/or daycare reimbursement account. Same sex domestic partner benefits are available.

Other assorted benefits provided include surgical loupes and the following: discounts @ Dell, Microsoft, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, & Nextel; Ford X-plan pricing on vehicle purchases; other auto supplier discounts; and a discounted rate to Fitness Works, a large gym located a few blocks from the hospital.

Moonlighting is also available, primarily to our PGY-4 & -5 residents at our satellite emergency departments, yielding about $120 per consult (after taxes).
