Family Medicine Residency

A message from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Family Medicine program at Henry Ford Hospital. I invite you to look through our website to view the highlights of our training program. Our program is anchored by its 7 pillars: dedication to patient care, education, research, community involvement, resident wellness, and recruitment. Our residency program provides a robust family medicine curriculum that is also uniquely tailored to meet individual career objectives.

At Henry Ford, we serve a highly rewarding patient population. Located in the heart of Detroit, ours is an urban population that spans a wide breadth of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Through our inpatient unit at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and outpatient clinics (Harbortown, Detroit Northwest, and CHASS clinics) we provide exceptional quality care for our patients. Our diverse faculty are committed to modeling the foundational elements of family medicine: patient-centered, community-oriented and evidence-based primary care.

As a larger health system, Henry Ford spans across three counties, with the Detroit campus at the epicenter. Additionally, as a tertiary care center we receive referrals and transfers from across the state of Michigan and the midwest region. On the Henry Ford Hospital Family Medicine inpatient service, we manage some of the most complex patients within that wide network. This creates excellent opportunities for exposure to a variety of pathology, rare diseases, and advanced therapies including heart, lung, liver and kidney transplant.

We emphasize the importance of developing highly engaged learners. We support our residents' own interests in addition to the core educational goals through didactics, experiential learning, unique electives and scholarly activity. We want to give the flexibility and autonomy to our residents to allow them to reach for their dreams in family medicine.

Wellness is an absolute priority of our residency program. We strive to make sure our residents are healthy physically, mentally, and spiritually. Although residency can be demanding, our residents are valued and supported with the goal of finding joy in their work and in our residency family. In the past year we have supported our residents to foster community through social events such as cross country skiing, a belle isle clean up day, a multicultural picnic, a big/little sibling game show and much more.

We have established ourselves as part of the community that we serve. We employ population health data to identify health inequities in Detroit and work toward solutions. Our commitment to address social determinants of health includes innovative programs such as Street Medicine and FreshRx prescription grocery deliveries. Our team-based approach and community partnerships sets us as an example for the rest of the health system.
