Inpatient Speech Language Pathology Clinical Fellowship

We are accepting applications for a full-time, 12-month inpatient SLP CF position. We are seeking applicants interested in gaining expertise in evaluation and continued assessment with various patient populations including neurological disorders, brain tumor, surgical patients, and ventilator/tracheostomy dependent patients. The candidate must have a strong academic background, be highly motivated, demonstrate initiative, and be ready to work in a busy, fast-paced clinical environment. Specific desired prerequisites include: completion of an internship in an acute care medical setting, basic understanding of cranial nerves, ability to differentially diagnose aphasia and dysarthria, and basic knowledge of dysphagia diagnosis and treatment.

Job Description:

  • Our SLP CF satisfies accreditation requirements for ASHA CCCs and Michigan licensure.
  • The anticipated start date for this fellowship is June.
  • The inpatient SLP team provides diagnostic services in the acute care setting for populations ranging from infants to geriatric; however, the primary caseload consists of adult patients.
  • You will be expected to complete competencies in bedside swallowing assessment, videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS), fiberoptic endoscopic evaluations of swallowing (FEES), cognitive/language evaluation, and trach/vent/PMV (including suction training).

  • Development of sound clinical knowledge base
  • Development of clinical competence and comfort with all inpatient populations
  • Self-motivation to research pertinent information relating to patient diagnoses or specific questions/topics discussed with medical personnel
  • Development of independent accurate problem solving and decision making
  • Development of accurate and concise communication with medical personnel, patients and family members
  • Integration of past and current medical history to predict possible outcomes
  • Acknowledgment of personal and professional limitations, and actively seek out assistance when necessary
  • Development of multitasking and stress management skills
  • Anticipation of short and long term future patient needs
  • Responsibility for follow through of discussed actions (i.e. note writing, literature review, presentations)
  • Readings/assignments will require attention after work hours
  • Participation in journal club (topic relevant to acute care)
  • In-services/presentations (example: dietetic intern presentation)
  • Optional time with other services (ex. ENT, Neurology)
  • Meet all requirements to complete the ASHA CFY and apply for ASHA CCCs
