Cancer Epidemiology, Prevention and Control Research

Cancer epidemiology is the study of the causes and trends of cancer, as well as the way cancer affects certain populations and geographic regions. While clinical medicine focuses on individual patients, cancer epidemiology studies large numbers of people and includes people who get cancer and those who do not.

Epidemiologists study the development of disease over long periods of time. They also study the effects of shorter-term significant exposures such as those that occur during natural or man-made disasters. Each epidemiological study can be viewed as one brick in a wall of many studies that eventually produce enough evidence to help change medical care and patient outcomes.

At the Henry Ford Cancer Institute, our cancer epidemiology, prevention and control program integrates researchers from many different disciplines of our cancer research program. We study the entire cancer continuum, including the prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and long-term outcomes of cancer.

Our cancer epidemiology, prevention and control research

Our research emphases include a focus on population sciences including epidemiology, health services, health promotion and cancer control.

We are the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) seat for several multicenter national trials, including the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial and the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST).

  • Of the 10 PLCO trial sites, we recruited the second-largest number of subjects (more than 24,600 individuals).
  • We also recruited 3,000 current or former smokers for the NLST.
  • Our investigators are active in steering committee and disease group activities.
  • HFHS leads the Methods and Operations Workgroup for the entire trial.

Our ongoing research includes:

  • Studies with national research groups:
    • Multisite HMO Cancer Research Network National Cancer Institute (NCI) study of statins and lymphoma
    • Study of the association of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and polyps and epidemiological patterns of CA125 in the PLCO study population
    • HMO Cancer Research Network behavioral intervention trial "Making Effective Nutritional Choices"
    • The Chronic Hepatitis Cohort Study (CHeCS), a dynamic prospective, longitudinal, observational cohort study created to assess the clinical impact of chronic viral hepatitis in the United States
  • Projects studying approaches to cancer prevention and treatment:
    • Cancer risk reduction through lifestyle and behavioral changes
    • Pharmacologic exposures that may increase or decrease cancer risk and the molecular pathways that drugs of interest may influence
    • Alternative approaches including acupuncture, exercise and vitamin supplements to improve quality of life for cancer patients
    • Additional studies of screening for lung, prostate, colorectal and ovarian cancers
    • Removal of delays and barriers to receiving recommended medical care
    • Medical informatics enhancements in contained health systems to improve disease surveillance and understand social determinants of health outcomes
    • Expanded administrative data sources as a research data laboratory
  • Breast cancer:
    • Molecular mechanisms of breast cancer metastasis, with additional interests in the role of lymphatic invasion as a mechanism to promote regional lymph node metastasis in breast cancer
    • Development of algorithms for identification of breast cancer recurrence using automated data
  • Colorectal cancer:
    • Electronic medical record (EMR) as a tool to encourage people to complete colorectal cancer screening
    • Relationship of NSAIDs and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use and survival among colon cancer patients
  • Prostate cancer:
    • Genetic and environmental prostate cancer research
    • Mapping of genes that affect susceptibility to cancer
    • Differences in metal exposure by race in people with prostate cancer
    • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and PhIP (2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine, a compound found in cooked meat) exposure and prostate cancer
    • Molecular pathology and genetic and epigenetic epidemiology of prostate cancer
  • Lung cancer:
    • Screening with low-dose computed tomography
    • Treatment of early stage lung cancer
  • Racial and ethnic disparities:
    • Quality of care and ways in which health care organizations can reduce or eliminate disparities
    • Ways to improve the decision-making process in which African-American patients engage with their physicians to plan adjuvant therapy for lung, breast and colorectal cancer
    • Cardiovascular disease outcomes among men diagnosed with prostate cancer and treated with androgen deprivation therapy
    • Incidence and mortality of prostate and lung cancers with respect to the effects of the built and social environments
    • Molecular genetic causes of racial disparities in cancer
  • Skin cancer:
    • Outcomes, including non-melanoma skin cancer and primary care competency in skin cancer screening
    • Web-based educational interventions to improve detection of skin cancer and communicating genetic risk to patients

Support for cancer epidemiology, prevention and control

Our cancer epidemiology, prevention and control research benefits from support and funding from external and internal organizations. Find more information about our grant-funded cancer research.

Our current funding sources include:

  • U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Sentinel and Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP): This partnership supports Henry Ford Health System’s unique databases that allow us to track medication side effects and outcomes. Read more about our cancer research cores and shared resources.
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH): Cancer epidemiology researchers participate in Henry Ford’s work with the NIH’s precision medicine initiative. We are one of only seven sites in the U.S. to be selected for this project. Learn more about precision medicine cancer research.

Get involved with cancer epidemiology, prevention and control research

Cancer epidemiology, prevention and control research relies heavily on patients, researchers and physicians.

  • Find a clinical trial: Henry Ford offers hundreds of clinical trials. Clinical trials help researchers study diseases and their treatment and offer eligible patients access to newly developed treatments or techniques. Learn more about clinical trials.
  • Become a Henry Ford researcher: We welcome researchers at Henry Ford to contribute to our cancer epidemiology, prevention and control research work. Join our research team.
  • Support cancer research: Henry Ford’s Cancer Research Advisory Group (CRAG) provides funding and resources to help advance our research. Learn how you can support cancer research
  • Become a patient advisor: Henry Ford is one of only a few hospitals nationwide selected to participate in a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research study. This new approach to research empowers patients and their families to ask questions, be involved and actively participate in studies that improve quality of life for current and future patients.
