Dr. Williams is both a practicing internist and senior research scientist. He has an appointment in the Department of Medicine and is the associate director of the Center for Health Policy and Health Services Research at Henry Ford Health System.

Dr. Williams graduated cum laude in both research and academics from the University of Michigan Medical School and is a former HHMI-NIH Research Scholar. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston. Afterward, he served as an officer in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He also completed a fellowship in General Medicine and was a National Research Service Award recipient.

His current research interests include genetic epidemiology, pharmacogenomics, and pharmacoepidemiology. His primary disease interests include asthma and associated allergic conditions, diabetes and associated conditions (e.g., obesity, high cholesterol, and hypertension), cardiovascular disease, and cardiopulmonary fitness. These broad interests are reflected in his six separate independent investigator awards through three different institutes (NIAID, NHLBI, and NIDDK) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
