Detroit-Windsor Tunnel Construction Notice

The Detroit-Windsor tunnel will be under construction beginning in mid-October, impacting commuting to and from Henry Ford Hospital and other Henry Ford facilities. Construction is expected to be completed in June 2018.

The project, part of a $21.6 million renovation, involves replacing ceiling tile and making other infrastructure improvements. The closures will mostly affect traffic during the evening and overnight hours Sundays through Thursdays. Here are key facts to know

  • Patients and visitors are advised to give themselves extra travel time and to call ahead if running behind.
  • All traffic to and from the United States and Canada will be shifted to the Ambassador Bridge.
  • All lanes on the bridge will be open in both directions during the tunnel closure.
  • The tunnel will be open to traffic Nov. 23 – 26 and Dec. 23 – Jan. 1 for the Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year’s holidays.

Important closure dates to know

  • Single-lane closures will occur from 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Sunday – Thursday, Oct. 2-19.
  • The tunnel will be closed Oct. 20-30, beginning at 8 p.m. Oct. 20; it re-opens at 5:30 a.m. Oct. 30.
  • The tunnel will be closed from 8 p.m. – 5:30 a.m. Sunday - Thursday Oct. 30 – Nov. 21, Nov. 27 – Dec. 23 and Jan. 2 – mid-June.

Holiday traffic

  • The tunnel will be open to traffic Nov. 23 – 26 and Dec. 23 – Jan. 1 for the Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year’s holidays.
