The Henry Ford St. John Children’s Hospital is a Children’s Hospital Association certified hospital staffed with a highly experienced team of pediatric specialists who are committed to your child’s health and will work together to create a personalized care plan that we expect for our own children.

Our doctors specialize in a variety of pediatric services that can help improve the health and quality of life for newborns through young adults up to age 21.

Henry Ford St. John Children's Hospital's Shery L. Cotton Pediatric Emergency Department is a dedicated level II pediatric trauma center where our board-certified pediatric emergency doctors, mid-level providers and care teams are specially trained to care for kids and deliver advanced life-saving services. Our pediatric emergency department was designed with children and their families in mind with 13 private exam rooms, including 4 behavioral health rooms, and two procedure rooms. 

Our 46-bed inpatient pediatric unit is designed to care and treat pediatric patients from birth to age 21. This unit provides a holistic, healing environment for children and their families. Pediatric hospitalists, neonatologists, and pediatric specialists provide expert personalized care for patients who require a hospital stay.

A dedicated child life activity room is led by certified child life specialists who are experienced in helping children and families cope with stress and other challenges while they are receiving care in the hospital. They are trained to provide positive distractions and calm your child when your child is feeling anxious about tests or procedures. And if your child is staying in the hospital, they offer therapeutic, emotional, and social support.

Our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is a 10 bed-unit, managed by board-certified pediatric intensivists. It is specifically designed to provide optimal surveillance and support of vital functions and therapy for pediatric and adolescent/young adult patients with life-threatening conditions.

Our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a 35-bed newborn service unit, specifically designed to provide care for the sick newborn infant through the most advanced techniques of neonatology in a family-centered environment. Henry Ford St. John Hospital currently provides the only Level III NICU on Detroit’s east side. The unit provides family-centered care and the latest in treatment and technology, as well as family education programs, to provide continuous life support and comprehensive care for extremely high-risk newborn infants.

Our special care nursery is an 8-bed newborn service unit located in close proximity to the birthing center and NICU. The special care nursery team treats newborns with health problems that require intermediate care and close observation. We also provide care for premature babies who no longer require the advanced care of the NICU.

The Henry Ford St. John Birthing Center includes holistic birthing suites, 31 labor delivery recovery postpartum (LDRP) rooms, and 16 postpartum and high-risk rooms, as well as 7 triage emergency areas, a same-day service area and three operating rooms. It is a referral center for high-risk pregnancies and deliveries.

Our pediatric ambulatory surgery unit (PASU) is a 14-bed unit to accommodate scheduled surgeries and procedures, along with pediatric infusions. 

Our pediatric surgery services provide a wide range of surgical services for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults, in addition to consultations for pregnant women. Our board-certified surgeons are highly qualified and work closely with families, to ensure that the children receive high quality, compassionate, and timely care.

Our pediatric orthopedic services provide surgical and consultative care for infants through young adults, for the spectrum of orthopedic care, including trauma, scoliosis surgery, limb-lengthening and sports injuries.

Our out-patient pediatric rehabilitation services include physical, occupational, and speech therapies and are available Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Our breastfeeding clinic provides unique services directed by a board-certified pediatrician to serve breastfeeding mothers, in which specially trained lactation consultants observe and assess feeding. The physician also works directly with patients to make breastfeeding a beneficial experience for both mother and infant. The clinic has been the recipient of the 2009 Statewide Health Care Community Award from the Breastfeeding Network of Michigan, the 2011 IBCLC Care Award from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, and the 2011 recipient of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Grants: St John – Mother Nurture Project.

Our multidimensional obesity and lipid clinic program cares for children with obesity or that are at high risk for obesity. All aspects of weight management are provided, including exercise regimes, nutrition consult, medical and psychological support, lipidemiologist support, and referrals for surgical options.

Our concussion clinic provides evaluations, treatments and preventative screenings for children in sports, or at risk for injury/outcomes from head injury.

Our TLC Support Group Program offers families the opportunity to talk with former NICU families who had babies in the unit. These volunteers offer many services to families including phone support, visits to the unit, and a substantial lending library. TLC is a value-based program dedicated to improving the well-being and quality of life of families experiencing a neonatal crisis.

Visitor Hours 

Pediatric patients may have parents/guardian visitors 24 hours a day, subject to seasonal restrictions during flu and RSV seasons. Additional friends and family members visit during regular hospital visiting hours unless otherwise approved. 

• 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.: Enter through the North Main Entrance. 
• 7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.: Enter through the Adult Emergency Department or Pediatric Emergency Department entrance.

Visiting guidelines for Henry Ford St. John Children’s Hospital

Following these guidelines will help us maintain a safe, supportive, and healing environment for our patients and their families.

Pediatric inpatients may have:

• Up to two parents or legal guardians at the bedside.
• Visitors must be at least 16 years old unless approved in advance by the patient's healthcare team.

Mother and baby units

Please refer to the specific visitation guidelines for these following units as they may differ:

• Labor & Delivery
• Obstetrics
• Family-Centered Maternity Care
• Mother-Baby Units
• Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs)
• Special Care Nurseries

Pediatric surgery patients

• Two parents or legal guardians may accompany the patient.
• Siblings and other minors are not permitted in surgical areas.

Pediatric emergency department

• A maximum of two visitors may be present in each room at one time.
• Visitors may switch with other approved visitors as needed.
• Patients temporarily placed in hallway care areas may not be able to have visitors unless approved by the care team.

Exceptions for all visiting in any pediatric area may be made:

• At the discretion of the pediatric manager or manager on duty
• For support persons for laboring mothers
• For end-of-life situations

Visitors conduct expectations

All visitors are expected to always follow hospital policies and staff instructions. Visitors may be restricted from the hospital campus for:

• Threatening or violent behavior toward patients, visitors, or staff
• Disruptive conduct
• Possession of any weapon
• Use of or transport of illegal substances
• Arriving under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Overnight visitation and expectations

• One adult support person, age 18 or older, may stay overnight with the patient.
• Remain on the patient's unit after regular visiting hours.
• Do not visit other hospital units or areas that are closed to visitors.
• Follow all instructions provided by hospital staff.

Infection prevention and safety

To help protect our patients, families, and staff:

• Wash or sanitize your hands before, during, and after your visit.
• Do not visit if you are sick or experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, congestion, sneezing, or other respiratory symptoms.
• Visitors may wear a mask at any time.

Required Masking Areas

Masks are required in areas caring for severely immunocompromised patients, including:

• Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
• Special Care Nurseries

Masks must also be worn whenever requested by staff. Masks will be provided in required areas.

We accept most insurance plans, including Medicare Part D and Medicaid. By working with your doctor, our pharmacists can help coordinate your pharmacy benefits. Henry Ford also offers financial assistance programs, if needed.

Spiritual Care

You can contact the Spiritual Care team by calling 313-343-7850 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays. 

The Spiritual Care team at St. John Hospital consists of interfaith staff chaplains, on-call chaplains, and volunteers that all work together with other hospital associates to foster a caring and supportive presence throughout the hospital. Our staff chaplains are specially trained to provide holistic spiritual care to persons of all religious faiths, including those without any religious affiliation. 

We are available for spiritual counseling, crisis intervention, prayer, communion, bereavement counseling, and other functions. We will also contact your Spiritual Faith Leader or family member upon request. Faith leaders from all denominations are welcome and encouraged to visit with their congregational members. 

Our spiritual care volunteers represent the Spiritual Care Department. These individuals supplement and complement the ministry of healing by serving within an ecumenical perspective informed by and respectful of a broad variety of religious traditions. 

Our Chapel 

Our Chapel is located on the 1st floor and is always open. A prayer book is also available to those who wish to offer their prayers in writing or to request prayers.

Programs and Services

Mass (Catholic Worship Service): As scheduled Monday-Friday at 11:30 a.m. and every Saturday at 4 p.m.

Television. The Chapel is always available for viewing on channel 57 on St. John patient room televisions. Mass and special public services can be viewed when they occur; otherwise, reflective music can be heard while the chapel is viewed.

Anointing of the Sick. The Spiritual Care Department can be contacted to plan for this service.

Communion. This service is available to all Catholic and Non-Catholic Christians as requested.
