Henry Ford Macomb Joint Replacement Center Receives Joint Commission Certification

June 10, 2011

The Joint Replacement Center at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township is the first in Macomb County and one of only four hospitals in southeast Michigan to receive the prestigious Gold Seal of ApprovalTM from The Joint Commission for both knee and hip replacement procedures.

"In achieving Joint Commission certification, Henry Ford Macomb has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its joint replacement patients," says Jean Range, executive director of Disease-Specific Care Certification with The Joint Commission. "Certification is a voluntary process and I commend Henry Ford Macomb for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves."

During their on-site assessment of the Henry Ford Macomb Center for Joint Replacement, Joint Commission surveyors noted as exceptional the model of care, the physicians' expertise, staff experience and "extras" like complementary medicine services. They also noted the number of patients who, for example, had a right knee replacement and came back to have the other knee joint replaced, demonstrating a high level of confidence in their care.

"This Joint Commission certification helps us demonstrate to the region that we have the highest level of commitment to quality care, and to creating a superior overall experience for our joint replacement patients and families," notes Deanne Miller, Henry Ford Macomb Regional Director of Orthopedics. "In fact, in reviewing our program, the Joint Commission noted that it was 'best in class,' a strong testament to strength of our orthopedic surgeons and staff."

Henry Ford Macomb has a number of high-skilled orthopedic surgeons who work closely with the Center staff. During their hospital stay, patients receive an individual plan of care that includes advanced pain management, physical and occupational therapy. Private rooms are designed especially for the needs of joint replacement patients. Individual and group therapy makes the most of the time patients spend in the hospital. The camaraderie experienced at the group sessions goes a long way to encourage recovery and build confidence.

The Center also offers a menu of complementary medicine services for patients to choose from, including therapeutic massage, Reiki and aromatherapy. The Center provides a unique staffing model that provides patients with care from a team of dedicated registered nurses and certified therapists who have been specially selected for the Center.

All of these special touches have helped place the Center for Joint Replacement in top 1 percent of hospitals nationally for patient satisfaction. The Center also is designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement by the BlueCross BlueShield Association and a Aetna Institutes of Quality for Orthopedic Care facility.
