Today, 25.8 million Americans are living with diabetes and an estimated 79 million American adults age 20 or older are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In Michigan, 7.9 percent of adults have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, with several hundred walking around undiagnosed.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90 percent to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. It usually begins as insulin resistance, a disorder in which the cells do not use insulin properly.
