CLINTON TOWNSHIP – Like many, Jason Huff was a yo-yo dieter, moving from one to another in hope of finding that silver bullet plan that would enable him to lose weight and keep it off.
Then he found the HMR Weight Management Services program through Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. After two years on the program, Huff has lost 150 pounds and gained a spring in his step in doing so.
“I couldn’t be happier,” says Huff, 41, a Mount Clemens resident and pastor of CrossWay Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Macomb Township. “The HMR program determined my low metabolism, which explained why many other diets I had tried over the years didn’t work.
“The doctors and nurses are encouraging and understanding of the issues that come with major weight loss, and the nutritionists are fantastic. They teach you not only how to lose weight but also how to eat well for a lifetime.”
The HMR program, a medically supervised approach that integrates diet, physical activity and healthy lifestyle skills through weekly coaching, was recently named the second-best weight-loss diet in U.S. News & World Reports’ Best Diets of 2015.
Henry Ford Macomb has been using the program to help patients for more than 25 years, and is the only HMR-licensed hospital in metro Detroit that provides the structured clinic program. Non-medically monitored and at-home options also are available. The program is offered at Henry Ford Macomb health centers in Shelby and Chesterfield townships.
“Unlike other diet plans, we have the data to show this program works,” says Pat Jurek, a registered dietitian and manager of Henry Ford Macomb’s Center for Weight Management. She counts the success stories in the hundreds.
“Weight management is a lifestyle issue that requires ongoing diligence,” Jurek says. “Our program gives patients evidence-based tools to lose the weight and keep it off.”
At 255 pounds, Huff is looking to drop a few more pounds and knows the HMR program will get him get there. “There’s no question that HMR made it possible,” he says. “My faith in Christ and family also helped.”
