DETROIT — Henry Ford Health System interventional cardiologist Akshay Khandelwal, M.D., has been elected to lead the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Cardiology through 2019.
The American College of Cardiology (ACC) is a medical society of the more than 49,000 cardiologists in the United States that guides the formation of health policy, standards and guidelines in heart care across the nation. The ACC also operates national registries to measure and improve care, provides professional medical education, disseminates cardiovascular research and bestows credentials upon cardiovascular specialists who meet stringent qualifications.
Dr. Khandelwal will begin his three-year term as President and Governor of the Michigan Chapter of the ACC in 2016. As governor, Dr. Khandelwal will represent the state’s legislative and regulatory concerns, practice needs, and recommendations to improve patient care on the national ACC Board of Governors. As chapter president, Dr. Khandelwal will also serve as the voice of the Michigan cardiology community when advising local and state government officials, other professional organizations and leaders throughout the state on issues related to cardiovascular disease, while sharing messages related to cardiac care with Michigan residents.

Dr. Khandelwal is the Director of Outpatient Cardiology Services at Henry Ford Hospital, one of the busiest heart hospitals in the Midwest. As Director of the STEMI program and Cath Lab Quality at the Edith & Benson Ford Heart and Vascular Institute, Dr. Khandelwal oversees complex coronary disease treatment for hundreds of critically-ill patients annually.

Dr. Khandelwal received his medical degree from Bangalore University in Karnataka, India, before completing his residency, chief medical residency, cardiology fellowship, and interventional cardiology fellowship all at Henry Ford Hospital. He has worked as a senior staff member in interventional cardiology since 2007.
Dr. Khandelwal and his family currently live in Northville, Michigan.
