Dr. Lisa Newman, renowned breast cancer surgeon and director of the Breast Cancer Program at the Henry Ford Cancer Institute, is teaming up with Henry Ford registered dietitian nutritionist, Andrea Thelen, to lead a breast health tour for shoppers at the Kroger store in Dearborn Oct. 10.

They’ll take shoppers aisle-by-aisle, explaining the relationship between what they eat and breast cancer – whether a survivor, in treatment or looking for breast cancer prevention tips.

The tour at Kroger, 15255 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn runs from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. The cost to register is $15. However, shoppers receive a $10 Kroger gift card, and the $15 ticket price is goes back to Henry Ford’s Game On Cancer, which provides financial assistance and free services that make cancer patients’ lives easier. The tour was created in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Topics to be covered include reading and understanding food labels and how food ingredients relate to health, identifying foods with maximum nutrients, shopping for special diets and dietary needs during cancer treatment as well as saving money on healthy foods.

The tour offers a rare opportunity to learn from Newman, whose knowledge as a surgeon and researcher puts her at the top of her field. In addition to serving as director of the Breast Cancer Program at Henry Ford Cancer Institute, Newman is leader of Henry Ford’s global breast cancer research program and founding medical director of the International Center on the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes. She is also an adviser to a number of physicians and boards focused on treating, curing and preventing breast cancer. Thelen uses her expertise in nutrition to help people manage disease, prevent sickness and understand food’s role in health and wellness.

Kroger LiveWell tours travel to different metro Detroit Kroger stores throughout the year, connecting shoppers with answers to questions about their own nutritional needs as well as those of family and friends when and where food purchasing decisions are made.
