FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DETROIT — Henry Ford Health System is pleased to announce cardiologist Akshay Khandelwal, M.D., has been named incoming Chair-elect of the Board of Governors for the American College of Cardiology, the nation-wide medical society for cardiologists in the United States.
Dr. Khandelwal, a senior staff member in Interventional Cardiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, currently serves as governor/president of the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). He’s an ACC fellow (FACC), as well as a fellow in the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI).
“I am honored to have the support of my peers and to be able to advance cardiovascular treatment and policy on a national scale,” said Dr. Khandelwal, appointed head of the Michigan ACC in 2015, serving through 2019. “I plan to advocate passionately on behalf of cardiologists, cardiovascular team members and patients at the highest levels of the organization.”
The American College of Cardiology is a society of more than 49,000 U.S. cardiologists, as well as several thousand advanced-practice providers and other cardiovascular team members, who guide the formation of health policy, standards and guidelines in heart care across the nation. The ACC also operates national registries to measure and improve care, provides professional medical education, disseminates cardiovascular research and bestows credentials upon cardiovascular specialists who meet stringent qualifications.
Dr. Khandelwal will serve on the ACC Board of Trustees from 2018 to 2020. During that time, he will serve 1 year as Board of Governors Chair and ACC Secretary, from 2019-2020.
As director of Outpatient Cardiovascular Services, Dr. Khandelwal is an integral part of providing superior care to patients of Henry Ford’s Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute, one of the busiest heart centers in the Midwest. He also serves as director of STEMI and PCI Quality, continually reviewing and improving the processes of caring for patients experiencing a serious heart attack (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction or STEMI, referring to a particular heart rhythm pattern on a heart EKG) or undergoing a catheter-based treatment for coronary obstruction (percutaneous coronary intervention or PCI).
Dr. Khandelwal shares his extensive knowledge in the field with those just beginning their careers in cardiology, serving as Clinical Assistant Professor at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine in Detroit. He has also co-authored several chapters on reperfusion therapies in both the ACC’s ACCSAP (Adult Clinical Cardiology Self-Assessment Program) and CathSAP (Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Cardiology Self-Assessment Program), as well as written multiple papers on PCI quality, STEMI and cardiogenic shock.
A firm believer in maintaining open communication and finding common ground to pragmatically solve problems, Dr. Khandelwal has a particular interest in building relationships within cardiology communities to benefit both patients and providers.
One of his mentors, Henry Ford Hospital Cardiology Division Head Henry Kim, MD, said he is pleased to see Dr. Khandelwal’s appointment.
“Dr. Khandelwal is so vested in advancing the science of saving lives,” Dr. Kim said. “That aligns wonderfully with the mission of ACC: to transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health through innovation and knowledge. He’ll be a great addition to the organization’s leadership.”
In addition to his professional and teaching endeavors, Dr. Khandelwal is actively involved in a number of other professional organizations, including the American Heart Association and the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.
Dr. Khandelwal received his medical degree from Bangalore University in Karnataka, India, before completing his residency, chief medical residency, cardiology fellowship, and interventional cardiology fellowship all at Henry Ford Hospital. He has worked as a senior staff member in interventional cardiology since 2007.
Dr. Khandelwal and his family live in Northville, Michigan.
