DETROIT - From grocery-shopping on a budget and deciphering nutrition labels to special diets and meal planning, registered dietitian nutritionists from Henry Ford LiveWell are taking Kroger shoppers on hands-on tours of metro Detroit stores.

The tours are a continuation of Kroger and Henry Ford LiveWell's push to encourage healthy eating and wellness by connecting nutritionists and shoppers.

While touring shoppers, the nutritionists deliver valuable nutrition advice to shoppers - even explaining what exactly to do with that kumquat or quinoa.

The partnership between Henry Ford and Kroger is in its third year and building on a movement to take nutrition information into the community and to educate the public about eating for maximum nutritional benefit.

As they give tours, the LiveWell registered dietitian nutritionists might discuss topics such as when organic may or may not be worth the investment. They might warn about foods with hidden salts or sugars, concerns for a hypertension or diabetic patients – if not all of us. They share recipes and give tips on how to make the dollar go farther and still eat well. They answer shoppers’ questions before they fill their carts.

The tours usually last 1 ½ to 2 hours. The cost is $15, and participants receive a $10 Kroger gift card. The $15 registration fee is donated to Game On Cancer, which helps patients with cancer cover the cost of transportation to appointments, for groceries and other needs.

Upcoming Kroger LiveWell tours will be:

April 1, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Kroger Farmington Hills, 25780 Middlebelt Road, Farmington Hills
April 11, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Kroger Livonia Northridge Commons, 33523 8 Mile Road, Livonia
