Blackened Fish Tacos with Creamy Coleslaw

  • 4 teaspoons sugar, divided
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 3/8 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper
  • 3 tablespoons reduced-fat sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons low-fat mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons minced jalapeno pepper
  • 2 tablespoons snipped cilantro
  • 3 1/2 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 8 (6-inch) corn tortillas
  • 8 lime wedges (optional)
  • 8 tablespoons salsa


To prepare fish, combine 2 teaspoons sugar, paprika, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and ground red pepper in a small bowl. Rub spice mixture over fish fillets and let stand 20 to 30 minutes, allowing fish to absorb the flavor. To prepare coleslaw, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, lime juice, remaining 2 teaspoons sugar, remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt, black pepper, jalapeno pepper, and cilantro. Add cabbage and toss to combine. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add fish fillets to pan and cook 3 minutes on each side, or until fish is cooked through and easily flakes. Remove pan from heat and using two forks, separate fish into chunks, gently stirring around the skillet allowing fish flakes to pick up spice mixture that has remained in the skillet. To warm tortillas, wrap a stack of 8 tortillas in barely damp paper towels and microwave on high for 30 to 45 seconds. Wrap tortillas in a clean towel to keep warm. Divide seasoned flaked fish and coleslaw among tortillas. Drizzle each assembled taco with juice from lime wedge, if desired, and top with 1 tablespoon salsa.
