Intensive Outpatient Program

Personalized clinical therapy for adults with mental health conditions

Our Intensive Outpatient Program, or IOP, is a concentrated course of therapy for people with behavioral and mental health disorders. Led by our trained experts, IOP is designed to progress patients quickly through treatment in a welcoming, safe group environment.

What to expect in an Intensive Outpatient Program

IOPs combine group therapy with patient education to help you better understand and manage your specific condition. After a thorough evaluation, your therapist works with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. This will include your goals for the program and what’s expected of you. We’ll check your plan regularly to ensure you’re making progress. IOP sessions include:

  • Group therapy, which focuses on specific behaviors that members of the group have experienced, such as hurtful relationship patterns or ways of thinking that make problems worse.
  • Skills training, which teaches strategies that will help you cope with problems as they arise in your everyday life. For example, you may practice relaxation techniques or healthy ways to handle intense emotions.

IOP sessions are held three times per week for up to five weeks. IOPs are offered at various Henry Ford behavioral health locations.

Attendance and time away from work or school

As with any therapy, regular attendance and active participation are necessary for the Intensive Outpatient Program to be effective. Your referring provider will decide if you need time away from work or school and, if so, when you can return.

Is the Intensive Outpatient Program covered by my insurance?

Many insurance programs cover IOPs. We’ll check your insurance plan and let you know if it covers the program, as well as any costs for which you may be responsible, such as:

  • Coinsurance
  • Copays
  • Deductibles
