Henry Ford offers an advanced breast imaging technology system called Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound, or ABUS, as a secondary screening tool for breast cancer.
ABUS imaging creates a 3D image of the breast. It is designed to help doctors find cancers hidden in dense breast tissue, which may be missed by mammography.
How ABUS works
Nearly half of women in the U.S. have dense breast tissue, making it harder to see abnormalities using a standard mammogram.
When used along with your screening mammogram, ABUS imaging can help provide a clear evaluation of your dense breast tissue.
ABUS imaging uses sound waves to create 3D pictures of the breast tissue. The Invenia™ ABUS is the only FDA-approved ultrasound system for breast cancer screenings when used in combination with mammography in women who have dense breast tissue and no prior interventions.
ABUS imaging is different from a mammogram. A layer of lotion is applied to your breast, and then a scanner is firmly positioned on your breast to acquire the images.
The exam provides your doctor with clear 3D ultrasound images. The physician will review the ABUS images along with your mammogram.
