Chiropractic Care

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is based on the theory that health is determined by the condition of the musculoskeletal and nervous system. Chiropractors believe that misaligned vertebrae impair the nervous system, thereby lowering defenses and contributing to pain as well as other diseases. Chiropractors also contend that optimum health requires vertebrae to be in proper alignment - a goal attainable through spinal adjustments, the foundation of chiropractic care. Chiropractors are considered a primary care physician and are recognized worldwide as spinal health care experts.

Did you know that chiropractors treat twice as many people for back pain as medical doctors do?

One main benefit of chiropractic manipulation is rapid relief because it frees patients from lower back pain and many other musculoskeletal disorders in a shorter period of time than other types of treatment.

We treat a variety of chronic conditions such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Low back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Knee pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Chronic headaches

What are the educational requirements for chiropractors?

A Chiropractor must graduate from an accredited Chiropractic college; and pass a comprehensive State Chiropractic Board examination. Educational requirements are a four year undergraduate degree with an emphasis in science and four year Chiropractic College. The curriculum in Chiropractic College is quite rigorous, and comparable to medical school in total class hours and content. Classes include anatomy, embryology, physiology, microbiology, diagnosis, neurology, x-ray, orthopedics, obstetrics, and gynecology. The last two years of Chiropractic College focus on clinical patient care. Graduates must pass four national board exams in order to complete their education. Continuing education courses are required.

Chiropractic care at the Center for Integrative Medicine

Lanny Orr, DC, CCSP and David A. Betts, DC, CCSP are Board Certified Chiropractors who will perform a thorough diagnostic evaluation, order needed x-rays, and then provide a clear explanation of the entire treatment program before beginning any therapy. The treatment starts with moist heat or infrared heat to relax the muscles that can hold misalignments in place, trigger point therapy, which is a form of myofascial release, or mechanical massage. These relaxing therapies are followed by gentle chiropractic manipulation. The total treatment time is approximately 20 to 30 minutes. The number of treatments required is determined by how long the condition has existed, the severity and the individual's healing ability.
