Myasthenia Gravis Clinic

Myasthenia gravis is a rare neurologic condition requiring the kind of specialized care you’ll find at Henry Ford Health. Hundreds of patients from across Michigan put their trust in our team. Our commitment to excellence has earned our program national recognition.

About myasthenia gravis

This condition occurs when antibodies from the immune system interrupt coordination between the brain and muscles. As a result, certain muscles tire easily, including ones that help you breathe. Symptoms are often temporary but can come on rapidly, causing a potentially dangerous situation (myasthenic crisis). Find out more about myasthenia gravis.

Comprehensive care for myasthenia gravis

We tailor tests and treatments to help you receive the services that are best for your needs. Our offerings include:

  • Electrodiagnostics: We use nerve stimulation testing to assess communication between the brain and muscles. We offer sophisticated options, including single-fiber electromyography. This test uncovers signs of mild myasthenia gravis that are otherwise difficult to detect. Find out more about our electromyography (EMG) and electrodiagnostics.
  • Urgent treatment for myasthenic crisis: We quickly coordinate services that bring relief. Care may include antibodies or plasma we deliver through a vein in your arm at one of our infusion centers. You sit in a comfortable recliner chair or lie in a bed during treatment and go home the same day.
  • Emergency care: Myasthenic crises that are severe or involve worsening symptoms typically require attention in the emergency room. We reach out to emergency room doctors to plan treatments and deliver them quickly.
  • Coordination: If you need therapies from other Henry Ford specialists, we work closely to keep your care moving forward.
