Healthy eating begins in the Demonstration Kitchen (DK)
Kids love to cook. Making your kitchen a family-friendly zone is a great way to help kids eat healthier. When kids become interested in food, they are more likely to pick up on healthy habits and make healthier food choices.
Not sure where to start? Well, we have the answer. The Demonstration Kitchen (DK) located within Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is a 90-seat classroom that offers cooking classes for children and adults. The goal of our classes is to help people transition to a healthier lifestyle. What makes us unique is that a team of expert chefs and registered dietitians collaborate to develop every class.
How does the DK help kids?
The DK can help in several ways. We host field trips for kids to come with a group of friends or with their school. The field trips are designed to educate kids ages 6-12 about healthy habits in the kitchen so they can put those skills into action at home. Classes include:
- A discussion of healthy food choices and safety tips in the kitchen.
- Instructions on how to read nutrition and ingredient labels on packaged foods.
- Practicing 5-2-1-0 habits to lead a healthy lifestyle.
- Learning about eating fresh, local and sustainable produce to not only better ourselves but also the environment.
The DK also holds seasonal hands-on kids cooking classes for kids ages 6-12 years old. For more information, view the list of upcoming DK Kids classes.
