Overnight Testing for Sleep Disorders

At Henry Ford, we have numerous sleep medicine centers that make it easy for you to be evaluated and receive proper treatment. All patients begin by completing a questionnaire and a sleep diary, followed by a complete medical and sleep history which is taken by a physician.

If necessary, patients are scheduled to stay overnight at the sleep medicine center for a polysomnography or, better known as a sleep study, which monitors sleep patterns as well as heartbeat, breathing, oxygen levels and other body functions during a night of sleep.

What happens during a sleep study?

  • The patient arrives at the center approximately two hours before bedtime.
  • Monitoring devices, which normally do not interfere with sleep, are attached.
  • The patient falls asleep, undisturbed in a private, hotel-like bedroom.
  • A staff member, who is available via an intercom, monitors the devices in an adjacent room throughout the night.

The results from your sleep study will usually be taken by a technologist, and later evaluated by your doctor. This may take up to two weeks, when you'll schedule a follow up visit to discuss the results and treatment options.

Our sleep medicine centers are located across the metro Detroit area and are beneficial for those with insomnia, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea and other conditions. Advanced treatment options, including surgery, are also available.
