Orbera® Intragastric Balloon
This procedure has been approved by the FDA for individuals with a body mass index of 30 to 40. It is part of a one-year weight loss program.
What to expect
This non-surgical procedure is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. Your doctor will give you specific preparation instructions ahead of time, which you will need to follow before the procedure.
During the procedure
Using a thin, flexible tube with a camera attached (endoscope), the physician will enter through your mouth to place a soft but strong silicone balloon into your stomach. The balloon is then filled with saline solution to take up about 70 percent of the room in your stomach. This limits the amount of food and drink your stomach can hold and creates a feeling of fullness with less food. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and most patients are able to go home the same day.
After the procedure
You will receive 12 months of instruction and support from a weight loss team that includes a gastroenterologist, an internal medicine physician specializing in medical weight loss, and a dietician. The balloon will be in place for about six months to jump start your weight loss. The majority of weight loss (30 – 50 pounds) usually occurs in the first four months. Your willingness to follow a medically supervised program, make healthy eating choices and increase your physical activity will greatly affect your long-term success.
