In October 2024, Henry Ford Health and Ascension healthcare facilities in Southeast Michigan and the Greater Flint area became one organization – stronger together and united in a commitment to improving the health and well-being of communities across Michigan.

With historical ties to both organizations, Grosse Pointe locals Lisa Vallee Smith and Jeff Smith are excited about what the future holds for the expanded Henry Ford Health.

To Lisa and Jeff, their planned gifts in support of Henry Ford St. John Hospital represent a powerful tool to make a philanthropic impact on a pillar institution in their community while also planning for the future.

“The hospital’s mission is to serve everyone, regardless of their circumstances. I think of one of the reasons why the relationship with Henry Ford works so well is because that is very much a part of Henry Ford’s mission as well,” shared Lisa, who chairs the board for the St. John Foundation – supporting Henry Ford St. John Hospital, Henry Ford Warren Hospital, Henry Ford Madison Heights Hospital and Henry Ford River District Hospital – and has recently joined Henry Ford Health’s Foundation Board.

Jeff – who served on a St. John Foundation Board committee supporting its annual fund efforts and also participated in a pre-med internship at Henry Ford Hospital as a college student – also appreciates the care advancements enabled by the joint venture.

“One plus one equals three,” he said. “By themselves, they were both very formidable institutions. Combining resources and services is really essential, and it makes a lot of sense. An important part of attracting people to Detroit and Michigan is having great healthcare.”

But long before the organizations combined, Jeff and Lisa committed themselves to making philanthropy a family value as donors to both the St. John Foundation and Henry Ford Health, among other organizations. Together they’ve developed a culture of giving back which they’ve shared with their children through the Smith Family Foundation. Three areas of particular importance to them are cancer, pediatrics and cardiology.

“All organizations can benefit from people who commit their time, their talents and their treasures. It makes a huge difference,” Jeff said. “And you can give with a tremendous amount of confidence now that the two organizations have come together. It’ll make a bigger difference now than it ever has.”

Lisa, who was born at St. John Hospital and whose parents also donated to the hospital, added, “I can’t tell you how many times Jeff and I have received texts from people who are at the hospital, feeling very vulnerable, and they see our names or my parents’ names and it gives them a huge sense of comfort.”

Although unexpected, Jeff and Lisa shared that the recognition has been very rewarding.

Added Lisa, “When you’re in the hospital, you feel very out of control. One little piece of familiarity can make a big difference.”
