Foundation Relations

We understand that foundations are conscientious with their resources, wisely matching their giving priorities with vital community needs. That’s why Henry Ford seeks to develop partnerships with foundations. We enjoy working collaboratively with you to identify projects coinciding with your board’s interests. Together we provide the best benefits available to the millions of metro Detroiters who rely on Henry Ford for their health care needs.

The need for foundation partners

Henry Ford Health System is actively involved in a wide number of enterprises, ranging from direct patient care and medical research to initiatives that improve the health and welfare of the region. We rely on foundation partner gifts to support a number of areas, including:

  • Quality patient care
  • Medical breakthroughs
  • Community outreach

The benefits of being a foundation partner

When a foundation considers giving a major gift to a nonprofit institution, what should it expect in return for its generous support? For starters, a proven track record of effective implementation of development funds, as well as the availability of innovative, essential programs designed to aid specific and pressing needs. Recognition and thanks are also expected and given, and with good reason. Without our foundation partners we could not accomplish half of what we do in our efforts to better our communities and our region.

Following are some highlights made possible by some of our esteemed foundation partners

Henry Ford Foundation Partner: The Carls Foundation

The Carls Foundation is known for its soft spot for children and we are thankful the board elected to generously support Henry Ford Health System’s Pediatric Dermatology Emergency Needs Fund. Through their gift:

  • The family of a newborn with a severe skin condition that required so many bandages insurance would not cover them all, received assistance to make up the difference.
  • A child whose body is covered with recurring lesions was provided with critical medication.
  • And a teen with an acute blistering disease, whose fingers had grown together, had surgical expenses covered in an operation to separate them.

For these children and their families, each gift made possible by the Carls Foundation means more time with their child and less time worrying about the overwhelming financial burdens that result from serious chronic illnesses.

Henry Ford Foundation Partner: The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation, through its Good Neighborhoods Initiative, is supporting the opening of a Henry Ford teen health center in Southwestern High School. Southwest Detroit is one of the neighborhoods designated by Skillman for its development giving and Southwestern High School has long been targeted by Henry Ford for a school-based health center. The Henry Ford School-Based and Community Health Program now runs 15 centers providing a full range of primary and preventive care for youth who otherwise would not receive it. We look forward to a long and productive partnership with the Skillman Foundation enhancing the health and welfare of Detroit's young people.

Henry Ford Foundation Partner: Women’s Committee for Hospice Care

Women’s Committee for Hospice Care (WCHC) is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to raising and granting funds to nonprofit hospices in southeast Michigan, including Hospices of Henry Ford.

The mission of the WCHC is to:

  • Help sustain the concept of hospice care
  • Provide the terminally ill with support and assistance during the last stage of life
  • Help offset expenses that exceed insurance company reimbursement

Through the ongoing charitable commitment of the WCHC, Hospices of Henry Ford can continuously offer high quality and compassionate care, and awareness education throughout metro Detroit.

Henry Ford Foundation Partner: The Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute

The Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute (FAMRI) sponsors research for the early detection, prevention, treatment and cure of diseases and other health complications caused by exposure to second-hand smoke. FAMRI teamed with Ronald M. Davis, M.D., Henry Ford’s director of the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and president of the American Medical Association, to investigate tobacco control at the local, state and national levels in an effort to improve the effectiveness of smoking cessation activities. Henry Ford received funding from FAMRI to conduct national surveys on such issues as smoke-free hospital policies, and how secondhand smoke affects the health of thousands of household pets – all with the aim of encouraging people to stop smoking.

A special thanks to our foundation partners

Our foundation partners are instrumental in helping Henry Ford Health System open doors in health care that otherwise would remain closed to thousands of patients. To them we give our sincere thanks and gratitude. By working together, every day we make a difference.
