You may have many questions about joining a research study.  We are here to help. We have listed some of the most common ones below.   • How do you keep your information about me safe and secure?

    Our Mom and Baby Research Studies teams make privacy and safety our number one priority and one of our most important considerations when dealing with your personal health information.

    • All samples we ask for (e.g., blood) will be taken by trained professional
    • All samples and data collected will be coded with study identification numbers and will therefore be unidentifiable
    • Important personal information like your name and contact information will be kept separate and a in secure administrator database on encrypted and password protected computers
    • Anything on the computer will be password protected and anything paper-based will be kept in locked and secure file cabinets
    • We do not use your name when presenting the data
    • All research staff are trained on the nature of confidential data
  • What if I change my mind about participation in the future?
    Taking part in this study is completely optional. You do not have to participate and you may leave the study at any time, without penalty. You will receive the same quality of care from your care providers whether or not they participate in this study.
  • How can I stay involved with Mom and Baby Research Studies?

    Keeping involved and connected is key for research updates. Here are a few ways you can stay involved:

    • Keep our team updated if your contact information (phone, email, or mailing address) changes
    • Keep an eye out for our study newsletter which will provide updates on research findings and information on current and future studies
  • Will I get my results?

    CANOE Research Study

    The CANOE Study will from time to time, make overall study results available to participants through the CANOE/ECHO websites, newsletters, community presentations, and scientific papers.

    REACH Research Study

    We believe in patients as partners! REACH is happy to share your study results with you. We will be sure to share and explain your results in a way that you can understand. 

    STAR Research Study

    We believe in patients as partners! STAR is happy to share your study results with you. We will be sure to share and explain your results in a way that you can understand. 

  • Why do you need me to participate?
    You will play a big part in improving our understanding of asthma and allergies and how to potentially prevent them from developing. The Mom and Baby Research Studies: Asthma and Allergies are the best methods of identifying risk factors for disease.
  • What does study participation involve?
    CANOE
    • We gather data and samples, beginning in the prenatal periods and then continue to follow mom and baby for data collection and observation for study outcomes
    • Maternal samples (e.g., blood, stool, cord blood, placenta, breastmilk) and questionnaires
    • Child samples (e.g., blood, hair and toenails, meconium and stool) and questionnaires
    • Home environment samples (e.g., dust) and questionnaires
    • Visits from CANOE staff and phone calls
    REACH
    • We gather data and samples, beginning in the prenatal periods and then continue to follow mom and baby for data collection and observation for study outcomes
    • Maternal samples (e.g., blood, swabs, stool, cord blood, placenta) and questionnaires
    • Child samples (e.g., blood, meconium, stooled diapers) and questionnaires
    • These questionnaires are short web-based; sent electronically via text or email
    • Medical records review
    • Home environment samples (e.g., dust, water) and questionnaires
    • Phone calls
    STAR
    • We gather data and samples, beginning in the prenatal periods and then continue to follow mom and baby for data collection and observation for study outcomes
    • Because you will already be a part of REACH, we will be using the data and samples already collected and then ask you for some extras as well. 
    SUNBEAM
    • We gather data and samples, beginning in the prenatal periods and then continue to follow mom and baby for data collection and observation for study outcomes
    • Maternal samples (e.g., blood, swabs, urine, hair, stool, palcenta) and questionnaires
    • Paternal samples (e.g., blood, swabs, stool) and questionnaires
    • Child samples (e.g., blood, urine, hair, meconium and stool) and questionnaires
    • Home environment samples (e.g., dust, water) and questionnaires
    • Visits from SUNBEAM staff and phone calls
