John Y Anagli, PhD

Biographical Statement

John Y. Anagli, PhD, is a translational neuroscience researcher at Henry Ford Health whose work focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that contribute to tissue injury and disease, with an emphasis on proteases — enzymes that regulate the breakdown and processing of proteins. His research has extensively examined calpains and other cysteine proteases, including how abnormal protease activity contributes to cellular damage and how targeted inhibitors may help protect tissue and improve recovery.

Dr. Anagli's research has applications across neurological and cardiovascular disease. His work has explored the role of proteases in cerebral ischemia, intracerebral hemorrhage and traumatic brain injury, including the use of proteomic approaches to identify molecular changes and potential biomarkers following neurological injury. He has also contributed to research investigating angiogenesis and treatment response in brain tumors.

Through cross-sector collaborations with investigators at Henry Ford Health, other research institutions and the biotech industry, Dr. Anagli works to translate discoveries about protease activity and cellular injury into potential diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. His research seeks to identify and translate molecular discoveries into patient-focused therapeutic and diagnostic opportunities that may ultimately lead to better ways to limit tissue damage, promote recovery and improve outcomes for patients affected by neurological and other complex diseases.
