About Me
Biographical Statement
Michael J. Bey, PhD, is an orthopedic research scientist, biomedical engineer and associate vice president for Basic Research at Henry Ford Health. He earned his doctorate in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan and has built an internationally recognized research program focused on understanding human movement and musculoskeletal function through advanced imaging and biomechanics.
Dr. Bey's research focuses on the biomechanics of the shoulder, knee and other joints, with the goal of improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. His work combines dynamic biplane X-ray imaging, motion analysis, three-dimensional modeling and computational biomechanics to precisely measure joint motion during everyday activities. These technologies have advanced the understanding of rotator cuff disease, ligament injuries, shoulder instability and joint degeneration while providing insights that guide surgical techniques, rehabilitation strategies and orthopedic implant design. Through extensive collaborations with orthopedic surgeons, engineers and rehabilitation specialists, Dr. Bey has translated innovative imaging and engineering methods into clinically relevant tools that improve patient care.
Dr. Bey continues to lead multidisciplinary collaborations across Henry Ford Health and with national academic partners to advance musculoskeletal research and biomedical engineering. His ongoing work is dedicated to developing innovative technologies that improve the diagnosis, treatment and long-term outcomes of patients with orthopedic conditions while fostering translational research across the health system.
