Biographical Statement
Stephen L. Brown, Ph.D., is the Division Head of the Radiation Biology Laboratories in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Henry Ford Health in Detroit. He serves as co-leader of the Translational Oncology Group, comprised of more than 100 physicians and scientists involved in translational cancer research at Henry Ford. Dr. Brown is a research professor in the Department of Radiology at the Michigan State University School of Medicine.
Dr. Brown has a B.Sc. in physics from The University of Waterloo, Canada and an M.Sc. and PhD in medical physics from the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto.

Research Interests
Dr. Brown's research group focuses on improving cancer outcomes by increasing the effectiveness of radiation therapy, reducing normal tissue toxicity and testing anti-cancer strategies in pre-clinical models and clinical studies. The work spans preclinical studies and human clinical studies, often leveraging advanced imaging. Current projects include:
- Evaluating radioprotective agents
- Investigating ultra–high dose rate (FLASH) radiation for normal tissue sparing
- Supporting clinical gene therapy translational studies
- Studying radiation-induced acute vascular changes in tumors following single-fraction exposure.
