Biographical Statement
Gary J. Gibson, PhD, is a musculoskeletal biologist and research scientist at Henry Ford Health whose work has advanced the understanding of cartilage, bone and connective tissue biology. He earned his doctorate from the University of Alberta and has held research leadership roles at Henry Ford Health while serving as a professor of molecular medicine and genetics.
Dr. Gibson's research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate skeletal development, cartilage biology and bone remodeling. His work has examined chondrocyte differentiation, apoptosis and extracellular matrix biology to better understand normal skeletal growth as well as diseases such as osteoarthritis and chondrosarcoma. He has also investigated matrix metalloproteinases, transforming growth factor-beta signaling and microRNA biomarkers associated with cartilage degeneration and post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Through multidisciplinary collaborations, Dr. Gibson has helped identify molecular pathways that may support earlier diagnosis and the development of therapies for musculoskeletal disease.
Dr. Gibson continues to collaborate with orthopedic surgeons, basic scientists and biomedical engineers to advance translational musculoskeletal research. His ongoing work is dedicated to improving the understanding of cartilage and bone biology and identifying novel therapeutic targets for skeletal disorders.
