About Me

Biographical Statement

Dr. Shailendra Giri is a senior staff scientist in the Department of Neurology at Henry Ford Health and professor of physiology at Michigan State University. His research program focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular emphasis on multiple sclerosis (MS).

Dr. Giri earned his doctoral degree in biochemistry and has spent his career investigating the intersection of immunology, metabolism and nervous system injury. He has pioneered the use of untargeted metabolomics, diverse metabolomics and immunological approaches, and machine learning to discover blood-based biomarker signatures for MS diagnosis, subtype discrimination, disease monitoring, and therapeutic response areas where reliable biomarkers remain a major unmet clinical need. His laboratory has made foundational contributions to understanding how metabolic dysfunction shapes immune cell behavior in MS and other neuroinflammatory conditions. This work has identified novel therapeutic targets and small molecules with potential to modulate disease progression. Dr. Giri's research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Dr. Giri has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and has led multidisciplinary research teams encompassing neurology, bioinformatics, metabolomics and clinical science. He is committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists in translational neuroscience.
