Xian Shuang Liu, PhD

Biographical Statement

Xian-Shuang Liu, PhD, is a senior staff scientist in the Department of Neurology at Henry Ford Health, whose research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurological injury and recovery. He earned his doctorate in neurology before joining Henry Ford Health, where he has built a translational research program investigating stroke, diabetes and neurovascular disease.

Dr. Liu's research explores the biological processes that drive brain repair following ischemic stroke and other neurological disorders. His work has focused on extracellular vesicles, microRNAs, gut-brain axis, and cell-based therapies that promote neurovascular remodeling, neurogenesis and functional recovery after stroke. He has also investigated the mechanisms underlying diabetic peripheral neuropathy and diabetes-related impairment of neurological repair, helping identify novel therapeutic targets for patients with cerebrovascular disease. Through multidisciplinary collaborations, Dr. Liu integrates molecular biology, neuroscience and translational medicine to develop regenerative strategies that improve neurological outcomes. His extensive body of peer-reviewed research has advanced the understanding of neurorestoration and the role of extracellular signaling in brain recovery.

Dr. Liu continues to collaborate with neuroscientists, neurologists and translational researchers across Henry Ford Health and national research networks to advance regenerative therapies for neurological disease. His ongoing work seeks to translate laboratory discoveries into innovative treatments that improve recovery and quality of life for patients affected by stroke and related neurological disorders.
