Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) Treatment

Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a two-pronged approach that combines surgery and chemotherapy to treat cancers that have spread to the lining of the abdomen. Henry Ford St. John Hospital was the first in Michigan to treat patients with this innovative treatment that combines the use of surgical and medical cancer treatment in one procedure.

Here you can learn about the procedure, who can benefit from this treatment, our advanced program and the impact it has made.

Why choose Henry Ford Health’s HIPEC program?

What you should know about HIPEC

Find information below about how this treatment targets cancer and why it may be a good option for you.

  • HIPEC advantages

HIPEC enhances the heated chemotherapy’s absorption in the abdominal area, providing the following advantages:

    • Minimizes the rest of the body’s exposure to chemotherapy
    • Directly targets microscopic cancer cells that are not visible to the human eye
  • What cancers can HIPEC treat?

HIPEC is an effective treatment option for certain cancers that spread to the lining the abdomen, including, but not limited to:

    • Appendix cancers
    • Colorectal cancers
    • Gastric cancers
    • Certain gynecologic cancers, including ovarian cancer
    • Mesothelioma
  • What is HIPEC?
Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) combines surgical and medical cancer treatments in one procedure to treat metastatic abdominal cancers. First, visible cancer cells are surgically removed, and then the abdominal cavity is “bathed” in heated chemotherapy for approximately two hours.
