Creative Mindfulness With Art

These virtual sessions are intended for adults. Adults who wish to have their children attend with them is fine, but please note of the sensitive and emotional topics that may be discussed and may not be deemed appropriate for younger children.

NOTE: If no participants join the call/class within 15 minutes after the start time, the call/class will end.

To assist you in the virtual sessions, the descriptions and suggested supplies to have on hand are listed for each week. Sometimes a link to print a template is provided. Just click on the link below to view and print. 


8/24 and 8/25: Stardust
Supplies needed: paper, colored pencils or markers, optional watercolor paint
Description: “We are made of star stuff” ~ Carl Sagan - In this session we will practice a breathing meditation and create artwork reflecting this.

9/7 and 9/8: Community Joy (Watercolor Painting to Music)
Supplies needed: paper, paint, and brush
Description: We will create an abstract painting while listening to music and focus on being in the present moment

Not only is creating art good for you but looking at art lights up your brain the same way as ‘gazing at a loved one’. In today's session we will talk about the benefits of making and looking at art and how we can spread the joy in our community. September 9th is Free Art Friday with the C.A.R.E. Program, and we encourage you to participate by sharing the work you create with your local community.

9/14 and 9/15: Found Poetry
Supplies needed: printed text, pencil, markers, or pens (OPTIONAL TEMPLATES: 123).
Description: In this session we will create a new poem or statement using a page torn from an old book (or printed from the available examples:

9/21 and 9/22: Progressive Relaxation
Supplies needed: (OPTIONAL TEMPLATE), colored pencils or markers
Description: In this session we will visually represent the meditative process of relaxing ourselves from our toes to the top of our head

9/28 and 9/29: Emotions in a Bottle
Supplies needed: paper, pen for writing, markers, or pencils (OPTIONAL TEMPLATE)
Description: If you could illustrate your emotions, what would they look like? Using the template, label the jars with your emotions and “fill” them with that emotion. Imagine that you can put some emotions away for a while and pull-out other emotions that you need more of right now. You choose

10/5 and 10/6: Balance
Supplies needed: paper, scissors, colored pencils, or markers
Description: We all need some balance in our lives! In this session we will imagine how we might arrange the elements in our lives to create balance.

10/12 and 10/13: Community Joy (One Little Word)
Supplies needed: paper, colored pencils, markers, watercolor supplies if you prefer
Description: what is one little word that will help you focus your positive energy throughout the year? Let’s use this to encourage others.

Supplies needed: paper, pen, pencils, or markers
Description: We will take a few minutes to reflect on and describe a happy memory from this past year. Then, we will illustrate the memory to help reinforce the positive feedback.

10/26 and 10/27: Support System Universe
Supplies needed: paper, markers or pencils, stickers (optional)
Description: In this session we will identify sources of support in our lives as well as identify the areas where we need support and self-care

11/2 and 11/3: Beautiful Frustration
Supplies needed: paper, markers, colored pencils
Description: We will turn our frustration into something beautiful while letting go of what we cannot control.

11/9 and 11/10: Community Joy (Abstract Art Association)
Supplies needed: paper, pen for writing, markers, or pencils
Description: do you ever think about what is going on in your subconscious? What is our brain trying to tell us… In this session, we will examine and describe an abstract image, then create a new image through a process of analyzing our own words.

11/16 and 11/17: Gratitude Explosion
Supplies needed: paper, pen for writing, markers, or pencils

Description: Research has shown that showing gratitude for things in our lives improves our overall wellbeing. During this session we will focus on the simple, everyday experiences that make our life enjoyable.

12/7 and 12/8: Community Joy (Mandala)
Supplies needed: (OPTIONAL TEMPLATE), pencil, colored pencils
Description: Mandala is the Sanskrit word for circle and often represents the universe. We will be creating a mandala using guidelines for a relaxing process resulting in a beautiful, finished image

Description: a visual reminder of the self-compassion you want to practice.

The materials you should have ready for the classes are:

  • Paper- which may include any of the following: printer paper, drawing paper, old mail envelopes, paper bags, wrapping paper, etc.
  • Pencil
  • Pens
  • Markers
  • Colored pencils
  • Glue / glue stick
  • Magazine (to cut up for collage)
  • Pages from an old book (I can provide text to be printed at home for found poetry project)

All of the projects will be completed using items you probably already have on hand. We do not expect you to make large purchases for supplies. The Art Therapist will be able to assist you with modifications to the project with the materials you have.
