June 18, 2026: Preventing Recurrence- Survivorship Series

Here at the SM Gavini Center for Cancer Prevention and the Prevention of Cancer Recurrence, we are committed to improving patient survivorship experiences. Join us for this information series to more about research and evidence-based behaviors that increase your risk for preventing cancer (and cancer recurrence). Discuss nutrition, activity, sleep/rest, the role of stress and overall lifestyle changes that are associated with improved health outcomes. Also, learn about our ongoing Yoga+ classes and lectures.

July 16, 2026: Genetic Cancers

According to the American Cancer Society (2024), one in three people will develop cancer in their lifetime. Despite these statistics, only 5-10% of all cancers are due to genetics. In this session we will explain genetic cancer, which cancers occur most commonly in families, and how this relates to cancers with familial links.

August 20, 2026: The Social Determinants of Health

In the United States, cancer does not occur equally across all social groups. Social Determinants (SDoH) are the nonmedical, environmental conditions that significantly influence health outcomes, quality of life, and longevity. These factors include: where people are born, live, work, play, and age. Join us to learn how health inequities impact individual and community health outcomes and understand the Healthy People 2030 Guidelines.

September 24, 2026: Prostate Cancer

The most frequently occurring cancer in men, according to the American Cancer Society, is prostate cancer. In this session we will learn more about the prostate cancer risk factors, the signs & symptoms, as well as strategies and behaviors you can use to reduce your risk. 

October 15, 2026: Breast Cancer

According to research, the average woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. During breast cancer awareness month and we will use this session to help women and their loved ones better understand both typical and unusual signs of different types of breast cancer, the multiple screening tests available, and evidence-based strategies that may help reduce your risks for developing breast cancer.

November 12, 2026: Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is considered the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. While smoking causes 80-90% of these deaths, nonsmokers are experiencing increased diagnosis. The good news is that early diagnosis improves the 5-year survival rate by approximately 65%. In this session we  will learn about the signs & symptoms of lung cancer, the risk factors (beyond smoking), as well as the benefits of smoking cessation and early low dose CT cancer screening tests. 

December 10, 2026: Stress & Cancer

Although there is a myriad of factors that contribute to diagnoses, current cancer research has examined the role of sleep, rest, and stress in increasing the risk for developing cancer. Join us to learn more about Positive versus Negative stress, the physiology behind stress; as well as the research that connects stress and poor health outcomes. You will learn more about FREE programs available through the SM Gavini Center for Cancer Prevention and the Prevention of Cancer Recurrence, including Yoga, sound therapy and meditation.
