Family legacy inspires transformative investment in the future of gastroenterology

For the Singla family, patient care extends far beyond a single encounter. Father and son, Drs. Ved and Sumit Singla, have spent their careers advancing high-quality, coordinated care for patients across Southeast Michigan — and the family’s impactful gift to Henry Ford Health will help expand that legacy for generations to come.

Detroit roots: the Singla family history

Since establishing his career in the Detroit area more than four decades ago — along with his wife, Punam, who is also a physician — Ved has remained committed to the principles of quality, compassion and excellence. After completing his residency and fellowship training at Wayne State University, he established a private gastroenterology practice in Warren, caring for patients throughout the region. Over the years, he and Punam have dedicated their careers to serving the people of Detroit and Southeast Michigan while helping strengthen access to exceptional healthcare.

Throughout his career, he consistently referred patients to Henry Ford specialists, recognizing the system's commitment to excellence, collaboration and continuity of care. To date, he is one of the department’s most loyal referring doctors.

"We're a healthcare system that truly believes in the uniqueness of what we offer, both in quality of care and continuity of care," said Ved. "I refer patients where I know they'll be taken care of."

His son Sumit joined Henry Ford Hospital as a fellow more than 15 years ago and went on to build his career within the gastroenterology department, now the Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and incoming Chair of the Board of Governors. Together, Ved and Sumit have witnessed Henry Ford's continued evolution as a world-class destination for complex care, research and innovation. Sumit credits the organization's collaborative culture and commitment to supporting physicians and care teams as key reasons he chose to remain at Henry Ford.

The impact of philanthropy

Inspired by decades of patient care and discovery, the Ved and his wife Punam made a generous gift to Henry Ford Health’s endoscopy and gastroenterology programs to establish the foundation for continued research and innovation in the field. A portion of this gift supported construction of the new state-of-the-art Singla Family Endoscopy Center, which is now the largest hospital-based endoscopy unit in the nation. Featuring 11 procedure rooms and technology capable of supporting highly advanced endoscopic procedures, the center is poised to transform digestive healthcare for patients across the region.

"Now, virtually any endoscopic procedure can be performed here. We have the space and infrastructure to complete these innovative procedures every day," said Sumit.

Despite its scale, the center was designed with patients at its heart. From convenient parking and easy access to the facility to abundant natural light and thoughtfully designed waiting areas, every aspect of the space was created to enhance comfort, convenience and healing.

"We wanted this to be a place where patients feel cared for from the moment they arrive," Sumit said. "The entire flow of the unit was designed around the patient experience."

The remainder of the family's gift supports the Ved and Punam Singla Family Endowed Chair in Gastroenterology, providing vital resources and flexibility to advance research, education, recruitment and clinical innovation. The endowed chair will also help strengthen Henry Ford Health's national reputation as a leader in gastroenterology while supporting future generations of physician-scientists and clinical leaders. Together, the Singla family's philanthropic investments create a powerful foundation for the future of digestive health.
