Hospital Expansion Progress
Construction at Destination: Grand is moving full speed ahead! Since May, more than 21,000 steel pieces have been erected, quickly starting to shape the superstructure of the new hospital buildings.
This summer, additional steel will start going up on the east side of the future hospital tower, following the arrival of a second crane. Crews will build upward through the fifth floor of the building that will connect to the new hospital tower, with a key milestone—the placement of 1,000-pound steel beams—planned for July 1. These will be the largest steel beams of their kind in the world and made entirely of recycled materials.
The steel structure, which will include our expanded emergency room, is expected to be completed in early October. Progress on the Central Energy Hub—which will supply clean, efficient heating and cooling to the hospital—is also on track, with its steel framework completed in early June.
Road Closures and Detours around Destination: Grand
As work progresses on the Destination: Grand hospital construction on the south side of W. Grand Blvd., there are road closures and detours to be aware of — especially near the Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion.
Sterling Street is now closed between W. Milwaukee Avenue and the alley north of Holden Street. This closure is expected to last through 2026. Work also continues on Holden Street to rebuild the viaduct and improve drainage. Holden Street is expected to reopen to traffic by September.
Please be aware that starting in August, the east lane of Cancer Center Drive will be closed, allowing construction crews to safely install below ground utilities. During this time, Cancer Center Drive will become 1-way, entering via W. Milwaukee Avenue and exiting onto W. Grand Blvd. We encourage patients and visitors to follow the posted construction signage. This temporary lane closure is not expected to affect patient access to the Cancer Pavilion.
Travel Tips
Please allow extra travel time, follow posted detours, and use caution when driving or biking near active construction areas. Thank you for your patience and support as we build a healthier future together!
Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences Research Center Progress
Construction on the research center hits a milestone this summer, with the final steel beam being put into place about one year after work started. The seven-story, 335,000-square-foot facility on Third Avenue in Detroit, just east of the Lodge Freeway, requires nearly 3,000 tons or almost six million pounds of steel, more than 5,200 steel beams and close to 50,000 bolts. Crews have also completed 12 miles of duct work and poured 18,000 cubic yards of structural concrete. Soon, crews will enclose the building and focus on the internal structure.
Workers have started installing steel studs on the building’s first floor, forming the internal framework for walls and rooms, while also applying fire-resistant material to the structure.
DTE’s neighborhood gas main renewal project continues near this project. This isn’t part of the research center construction, but it is taking place nearby, so Henry Ford Health visitors and neighbors should be on the lookout for intermittent lane closures in the area.
