Clinical Rotations

Inpatient Rotations

• Luminal GI Consultation Service
• Fellows assigned to this service are responsible for inpatient luminal GI consults at Henry Ford Hospital. The GI consult team consists of a senior staff general gastroenterologist, a senior fellow and two junior fellows. The team also may include internal medicine residents and medical students. Fellows on this rotation assess a wide variety of acute and chronic gastrointestinal conditions while also performing any necessary diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic management.
• Hepatology Consultation Service
  • Fellows assigned to this service are responsible for inpatient hepatology consults at Henry Ford Hospital. The hepatology consult team consists of a senior staff hepatologist and two fellows.  The team also may include visiting house officers, internal medicine residents, and medical students. Fellows on this rotation manage hospitalized patients with various acute and chronic hepatologic issues, participate in weekly liver transplant meetings, and are actively involved in the pre- and post-operative management of liver transplant patients
• Advanced GI Consultation Service
  • Fellows assigned to this service are responsible for inpatient advanced GI consults at Henry Ford Hospital. The advanced GI consult team consists of a senior staff advanced gastroenterologist, a senior fellow, and a junior fellow. The team also may include visiting house officers, internal medicine residents, and medical students. Fellows on this rotation manage patients with pancreaticobiliary diseases and learn to perform complex therapeutic endoscopic procedures including but not limited to EUS, ERCP, luminal stent placement, RFA and cryotherapy of Barrett's esophagus, single balloon enteroscopy, and EMR.
• West Bloomfield GI and Hepatology Consultation Service
  • Fellows assigned to this service are responsible for inpatient GI consults at West Bloomfield Hospital. This is a smaller community-type hospital which provides exposure to an environment like that of private practice. The West Bloomfield GI consult team consists of a senior staff general gastroenterologist, a senior fellow, and a nurse practitioner. Fellows on this rotation manage patients with a wide array of gastrointestinal complaints while performing inpatient and outpatient endoscopic procedures.

Outpatient Rotations

• Outpatient Gastroenterology
  • On this rotation, fellows gain proficiency with performing outpatient EGDs and colonoscopies under the care of a supervising senior staff gastroenterologist. They also provide longitudinal care for patients in their general GI continuity clinic.
• Outpatient Subspecialty Clinics
  • Since Henry Ford is a tertiary care referral center, our fellows benefit from being able to participate in a variety of subspecialty clinics focused on hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal motility, pancreaticobiliary, and nutrition. During these immersive rotations, fellows work with senior staff gastroenterologists who specialize in these fields to manage a diverse array of patients who are often referred from across the state and Michigan. Fellows also gain experience with specialized procedures such as chromoendoscopy, EndoFLIP, pH monitoring, esophageal and anorectal manometry.
• Radiology
  • Our fellows spend a week-long rotation working with radiologists to learn how to interpret various gastrointestinal radiographic studies including but not limited to abdominal CT, ultrasound, barium swallow, and defecography.
• Capsule endoscopy
  • On this rotation, fellows read and interpret outpatient video capsule endoscopy studies and provide management recommendations based on findings.  Fellows also perform outpatient endoscopy and see patients in their GI continuity clinic while on this rotation.
