About Detroit & Michigan

MFM members at a marathon raceChoosing a fellowship is about more than a curriculum, it's about where you'll actually spend the next three years living, eating, and thriving!

Why Detroit?

Detroit has spent the last decade in the middle of one of the most talked about urban comebacks in the country. Downtown and Midtown are packed with new restaurants, a walkable riverfront, and a genuine sense of momentum, while still being one of the most affordable big cities in the U.S. to live in.

It's also a city with an enormous, diverse patient population and high acuity referral base, which, frankly, is why you're looking at MFM programs here in the first place. But when you're not working on your research or learning fetal echo, here's what's waiting for you outside the hospital.

This is, unapologetically, a food city, and fellows quickly learn that Metro Detroit's dining scene punches well above its weight. A few themes worth knowing:

Classic Detroit comfort food. Coney dogs (a chili dog piled with onions and mustard) are a local rite of passage, and Detroit-style pizza, thick, square, with a crispy caramelized cheese edge, is its own beloved food group.

A legendary public market. The Eastern Market is one of the oldest and largest public markets in the country runs every Saturday year-round, with fresh produce, flowers, spices, and some of the best people watching in the city.

A late night dining district. A historic downtown neighborhood is known for tableside flaming cheese, hearty Greek fare, and bakeries that stay open well past midnight.

A dining scene on the national radar. Metro Detroit has picked up multiple James Beard Award nods in recent years, and new restaurants, wine bars, and chef driven concepts continue to open across downtown, Midtown, and the surrounding suburbs.

Deep Middle Eastern food culture. A nearby community is home to one of the largest Middle Eastern populations in the country and is widely considered one of the best places in the Midwest for Lebanese and Yemeni food.

Walkable suburban food scenes. Several close-in suburbs, each just 15 to 25 minutes from downtown, have their own dense restaurant rows, perfect for a weekend food crawl.

  • Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), home to one of the largest and most respected art collections in the country, including a famous mural hall
  • Motown Museum dedicated to a legendary music label, genuinely moving if you like music history
  • Belle Isle is a large island park on the Detroit River with an aquarium, conservatory, and skyline views
  • The Detroit Riverwalk, miles of paved trail along the water, great for a run after a long call shift
  • The Detroit Zoo, consistently ranked among the best in the country
  • Live professional sports, with baseball, football, hockey, and basketball teams all downtown or nearby; it's one of the few cities where you can catch all four major pro sports within a few miles of each other
  • Music festivals, including a free jazz festival every Labor Day weekend and a nationally known electronic music festival each Memorial Day weekend

  • Ann Arbor is about 45 minutes away, great for a change-of-scenery dinner or football Saturdays
  • An international border crossing, is just a bridge or tunnel away making international day trips/weekend trips a real possibility.
  • Northern Michigan, the state has more shoreline than the Atlantic seaboard and nearly 100 state parks. Dune country, charming small towns, and Great Lakes beaches are all within a few hours' drive and worth a long weekend during a lighter rotation
