Education Room Dedicated in Name of Henry Ford Physician

DETROIT - The Dr. Jan and Eva Rival Education Room at Henry Ford Hospital was recently dedicated in honor of longtime physician Jan Rival, M.D., for his 45 years of service as a senior staff internist and preceptor to medical residents.

Raised and educated in Czechoslovakia, Dr. Rival earned a medical degree summa cum laude from Komenski University in Bratislava. He completed a fellowship in cardiology at Philadelphia General Hospital and Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Rival joined Henry Ford Hospital in 1969, and was division head within the Department of Internal Medicine from 1985-1996. He served from 2000-2007 as president of the Henry Ford Medical Association and was the recipient of the Fred W. Whitehouse, M.D., Distinguished Career Award in 2008, in recognition of exemplary service epitomizing the mission of the Henry Ford Medical Group.

In 2010, Dr. Rival was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award, which honors administrators or physicians who have significantly impacted Henry Ford Health System through outstanding leadership and have made significant contributions to the field of medicine.

His patients have honored him by creating a traveling scholarship in his name, awarded annually to an exceptional resident in the Department of Internal Medicine. In addition, Henry Ford presents the Jan Rival Outstanding Resident Award each year to a physician-in-training.

Dr. Rival served as governor of the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), which presented him with its Laureate Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. This year, the ACP elected him to Mastership, the highest honor bestowed on members. He also is a fellow in the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Rival has authored, or co-authored, more than 40 publications and abstracts.
