Henry Ford Health CEO Named One of the Most Influential People in Healthcare

September 16, 2014

DETROIT – Nancy Schlichting, CEO of Henry Ford Health System, has been selected as one of the “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.”

The list is published in Modern Healthcare magazine.

This is the seventh time that Schlichting has been selected by the magazine, more than anyone else in Michigan.

Schlichting was recently named chair of a 17-person advisory committee that will create a new Innovation District in Detroit, aimed at facilitating new connections and ideas, accelerating the commercialization of those ideas, and supporting the Detroit economy.

She also serves on several national and community boards, including The Kresge Foundation, Walgreen Company, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago – Detroit Branch, Detroit Regional Chamber (Past Chair), Citizen’s Research Council of Michigan, Detroit Economic Club, and Downtown Detroit Partnership.

Schlichting has been the recipient of a number of awards thus far this year, including National Center for Healthcare Leadership’s Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award; ACHE Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Regent’s Award; and the American Hospital Association/Health Research & Educational Trust’s 2014 TRUST Award.

According to Modern Healthcare magazine, the “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare program honors individuals in healthcare who are deemed by their peers and an expert panel to be the most influential individuals in the industry, in terms of leadership and impact with rankings published in our annual list.”

The publication received more than 15,000 submissions from readers. The final ballot comprising 300 candidates was based on those receiving the most nominations.

Readers then voted for their top five candidates from May 5 to June 13. More than 31,000 ballots were cast, representing 155,000 votes for individual candidates. Readers' votes counted toward 50% of the final outcome; the senior editors at Modern Healthcare accounted for the other 50% to determine the final ranking.

Among the top five “Most Influential People in Healthcare” are:

  1. President Barack Obama
  2. Bernard Tyson, President and CEO, Kaiser Permanente
  3. Sylvia Mathews Burwell, Secretary, HHS
  4. Stephen Hemsley, CEO, UnitedHealth Group
  5. Marilyn Tavenner, Agency Administrator, CMS

The other person selected from Michigan was Dr. Richard Gilfillan, President and CEO, CHE Trinity Health.
