2021 Turkey Bowl

After a year off in 2020 due to Covid, the annual Turkey Bowl was back on November 20, 2021. The Turkey Bowl grew out of the old Artic Football League and, according to the legend, has been a departmental tradition since 1980! The faculty continued their winning ways again this year with a 28-7 victory. The staff have a perennial dominance in the series that now stands at 39-1-1.

The residents had a strong showing and seemed to have an impenetrable defense on the staff’s first drive. After several drives ending in punts on both sides, it looked like the game could go scoreless for the first half. But alas, much to the residents dismay, the staff connected for a touchdown throw late in the second half. The staff defense remained strong, and a poor punt by the residents gave the staff great field position near the end of the first half. The staff marched down the field and handed the ball off to Stan, our amazing peer recovery coach, who shot right down the middle behind a wall of blockers (including our chair, John Deledda) and went in for the touchdown. The second half started with a failed drive by the residents. Sudhir Baliga caught an amazing one-handed grab in the endzone for our 3rd touchdown. We continued to pummel the residents on defense. Late in the 4th, we marched down the field and Jason Folt caught a go-ahead touchdown to put us up 28-0. The game ended after the residents pulled in an interception and ran it back for a touchdown to make the final score 28-7.

The game was also memorable for record attendance. No injuries were reported. Dr. Miller and the staff team took home the Lewandowski trophy once again!
