About Me

I specialize in neurological surgery with a particular interest in complex spine surgery including spinal deformity, scoliosis and kyphosis with the application of minimally invasive spine surgery techniques to these pathologies. I was director of spinal surgery for the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Michigan from 2003 to 2017, where I built a nationally acclaimed practice dealing in complex spinal surgical pathologies.

I am one of only two neurosurgeons to have been awarded the visiting fellowship award from the Scoliosis Research Society. I was founder and director of a CASH accredited complex spinal surgery fellowship program that trained 12 fellows across the country along with many residents from the University of Michigan.

I am recognized as a key opinion leader, and I collaborate with several international spine companies, such as J&J, Zimmer Biomet and Globus Medical, in the development and advancement of spinal surgery technology for which I hold several patents. I have been an invited lecturer on five continents, and I am regularly invited as a featured speaker and course chairman for national and international conferences and teaching courses.

Philosophy

My mission is to provide the most advanced treatment option dictated by evidence based medicine. I aim to offer my patients a customized treatment protocol resulting in the best patient experience with the best outcome possible, while avoiding the risk of unnecessary or prolonged treatments. The care plan will always be specific to each individual patient. My ultimate goal is to provide the right care for our patients so they can get their lives back, return to enjoying daily activities and have the best quality of life possible.
