About Me
Biographical Statement
Juan P. Reyes Genere, MD, is a gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist at Henry Ford Health. He specializes in minimally invasive endoscopic treatments for complex conditions affecting the digestive system. His clinical interests include narrowing, or strictures, of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon; complex polyps and early gastrointestinal cancers; pancreatic and bile duct disorders; gastrointestinal leaks and fistulas; and other conditions requiring advanced endoscopic treatment.
Dr. Reyes Genere earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at Mayo Clinic, followed by advanced training in therapeutic endoscopy at Washington University School of Medicine.
Before joining Henry Ford Health, Dr. Reyes Genere served on the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, where he led a program focused on the endoscopic treatment of complex gastrointestinal strictures, including strictures associated with inflammatory bowel disease. At Henry Ford Health, he provides advanced endoscopy care across multiple hospitals and works closely with surgeons, radiologists and other specialists to develop individualized treatment plans for patients with complex digestive conditions, with special interest in gastrointestinal strictures.
Care Philosophy
I believe that excellent care begins with listening. Digestive conditions and advanced procedures can be stressful, and I want my patients to feel informed, supported and actively involved in their care. I take the time to explain the diagnosis, available treatment options and expected recovery in clear, understandable language.
My goal is to develop a personalized treatment plan that reflects each patient's needs and priorities. Whenever possible, I use minimally invasive endoscopic treatments to address complex conditions while reducing discomfort and recovery time. I also work closely with other specialists to provide safe, coordinated and compassionate care.
Research Interests
Dr. Reyes Genere's research focuses on improving the endoscopic treatment of benign gastrointestinal strictures. His work examines how the appearance and physical characteristics of a stricture can help predict treatment response, recurrence and the need for additional therapy. He is particularly interested in developing objective measurements that can help physicians select the most effective treatment for each patient.
He also conducts research in medical device innovation and localized drug delivery within the digestive tract. His work includes the development of new endoscopic implants and therapies designed to promote healing, prevent scar tissue from returning and improve outcomes after advanced endoscopic procedures. Additional interests include the treatment of gastrointestinal leaks and fistulas, procedural quality and safety, and expanding access to advanced endoscopic care.
