Biographical Statement

Brien J. Smith, M.D., MBA is a board-certified neurologist and nationally recognized expert in epilepsy who serves as Chair of the Department of Neurology at Henry Ford Health. With more than three decades of experience, Dr. Smith is deeply committed to providing compassionate, high-quality care to patients with complex neurological conditions.

Dr. Smith has dedicated much of his career to Henry Ford, where he previously spent 18 years caring for patients and leading advanced epilepsy and neurophysiology programs. He brings extensive leadership experience from health systems across Michigan and Ohio, always with a focus on improving patient outcomes, access to care, and innovation in treatment.

He earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed his neurology residency at Henry Ford Hospital, where he also served as chief resident. Dr. Smith completed specialized fellowship training in epilepsy and EEG at Indiana University. He also holds an MBA, reflecting his commitment to advancing patient-centered care through strong clinical leadership.

Dr. Smith is known for his dedication to patients, medical education, and research, and he is proud to continue serving the Detroit community and beyond as part of Henry Ford Health.
