Lactation Consultants
You may be eager to begin nursing, but breastfeeding is a learned skill, and some mothers and babies experience difficulties, especially in the beginning. At Henry Ford, we offer help from International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC), who specialize in assisting breastfeeding mothers.

From inpatient lactation to breastfeeding support groups, we offer guidance to help make breastfeeding a comfortable and rewarding experience.
After the birth of your baby, internationally board-certified lactation consultants are available to support you 7 days a week and most nights. Our nurses also have extensive experience in breastfeeding support.
If your baby needs extra care, we are ready to help. Lactation consultants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are available 6 days a week. We are committed to providing all of the resources you’ll need to care for your family.
Outpatient Breastfeeding Clinic
When you and your baby need more advanced care after your discharge, you’ll have the support you need at Henry Ford St. John Hospital. Our doctor-led outpatient breastfeeding clinic helps address breastfeeding concerns for you and your baby. Breastfeeding specialists deliver care for those with:
- Cleft palate
- Down syndrome
- Insufficient milk supply
- Oversupply of milk
- Painful breastfeeding
- Poor latch
- Poor weight gain
- Prematurity

Henry Ford St. John Mother Nurture Club
The Mother Nurture Club is a virtual breastfeeding support group. Meet with our peer counselors and connect with other pregnant or new mothers. For more information, call (313) 363-6838.
The Nurturing Nook
A full-service breastfeeding store is conveniently located on the hospital campus. The store is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For any questions, please call (313) 343-3146.
