Glaucoma Surgery
Glaucoma surgery includes advanced laser treatments and procedures used to lower eye pressure
In most cases, glaucoma treatment begins with prescription eye drops. While there is no cure for glaucoma , these and other treatments are designed to help prevent vision loss by lowering pressure in the eye. In some cases, laser treatments or surgical procedures may be recommended.
Advanced glaucoma surgery
Glaucoma surgery is designed to either reduce fluid production in the eye or improve fluid drainage. Our experienced ophthalmic surgeons offer several laser and surgical options, including:
- Trabeculoplasty: A laser procedure that improves fluid drainage. Most commonly used to treat open-angle glaucoma .
- Iridotomy: A laser procedure used to treat angle-closure glaucoma. A small opening is created in the iris to allow fluid to flow more freely.
- Laser cyclophotocoagulation: Reduces fluid production in the eye. Typically used for more advanced cases of glaucoma.
- Trabeculectomy (filtration surgery): Creates a tiny opening in the sclera (the white part of the eye) to allow fluid to drain.
- Glaucoma drainage devices: Also known as aqueous shunts or implants, these create a new drainage pathway in the eye.
- Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS): Includes devices such as the iStent®, which bypass blocked drainage pathways.
