Molecular Breast Imaging Prep Information

Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI) is a secondary screening tool for breast cancer, designed to increase early detection of invasive breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue when used in addition to digital mammography or 3D mammography by using a special camera and radioactive tracer injected through a vein in the arm to create a functional image of the breast.

Procedure

  • You will need to undress from the waist up and wear a gown.
  • You will be seated in a chair for the study.
  • The technologist will position your breasts to get the best test results.
  • Your breasts will be mildly compressed between two cameras which take a series of images.
  • The entire procedure takes 30-45 minutes.

Preparation

  • Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior to your exam, except fluids including black coffee, tea, diet soda, or water.
  • Bring a prescription if your doctor has given one to you.
  • Bring prior mammography exams from other facilities with you at the time of the current exam.
