From Flint to Wyandotte: Patti Finds Expert Care for a Complex Hiatal Hernia

When Patti began experiencing heart palpitations and shortness of breath, she knew something wasn't right.

After undergoing a series of tests, her local gastroenterologist in Flint diagnosed her with a giant type III hiatal hernia, a complex condition in which more than half of her stomach had moved into her chest. Recognizing the severity of her case, they recommended thoracic surgeon Dr. Okereke at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital.

Although the drive from Flint to Wyandotte was considerable, Patti didn't hesitate.

"I wanted the very best care," she said. "Making the trip was absolutely the right decision."

Because of the complexity of her procedure, Patti experienced some challenges during her recovery. But she never questioned the care she was receiving.

"My father and brother were anesthesiologists, so I understood that recovery can have its ups and downs," she said. "I was confident I was in excellent hands and receiving the best care possible."

She was also deeply appreciative of the communication she received throughout her hospital stay. Patti was especially grateful that attending physician Dr. Bazzi took the time to speak with her brother, carefully explaining her condition, treatment plan, and recovery. Knowing her family understood every step of her care provided an added sense of reassurance.

Following her surgery, Patti stayed with a close friend in Waterford while she recovered. There, she received home visits from a nurse and physical therapist before returning home to Flint, allowing her to focus on healing with the support she needed.

Today, Patti is grateful for how far she has come.

After dedicating 33 years to teaching and positively impacting more than 1,000 students, she's embracing retirement. She enjoys meeting friends for lunch, loves traveling whenever she can, and is looking forward to returning to her vacation home to continue making memories.

While she's thankful for the successful outcome of her surgery, it's the people who cared for her that left the greatest impression.

Patti wanted to recognize nurses Ed, Elaina, Lucy, Laura, and Talicia; physical therapist Dax; and Aquila, who helped keep her room clean and comfortable throughout her stay.

"These people made being in the hospital not so bad," Patti said. "They were kind, attentive, took the time to get to know me, and had such great attitudes. They truly made a difference."

Patti lives by a simple philosophy: "Throw kindness around like confetti." She believes the team at Henry Ford Wyandotte embodies that spirit every day. "Their kindness meant so much to me," she said. "I hope they know the impact they have on the lives of their patients."

For Patti, traveling to Henry Ford Wyandotte wasn't simply about receiving advanced surgical care. It was about finding a team that combined exceptional clinical expertise with genuine compassion, care that helped her heal, regain her quality of life, and return to the people, places, and experiences she treasures most.
