Program Director

Residency Training Program: Botsford Hospital (Farmington Hills, MI)

How long have you been at HFMH? 12 years

What do you like about the HFMH EM residency training program?
This is a high volume, high acuity ER. The hospital has great specialty support and no fellowships (you talk directly to the attending!) The camaraderie between our faculty and residents is unmatched. We have worked hard to create a program that I would have wanted to train at- EM is the foundation but there is a big emphasis on critical care and pediatrics. You’ll never leave a peds code wishing you had done a week of dermatology instead!

What do you think makes for a great EM resident?
Being accountable, self-motivated, adaptable and a problem solver! Most importantly- believing in a team model. When we work to build each other up, we all end up being and doing better.

What do you like best about Metro Detroit/Detroit?
You're never far from a great body of water! There are lakes everywhere that are clean and easy to access. Plus, The University of Michigan is close by.

Assistant Program Director

Omar Francis, D.O.
Hometown: Sterling Heights, MI
Undergrad: Oakland University,
Medical School: MSUCOM
Residency Training Program: Henry Ford Macomb Emergency Medicine (Clinton Twp., MI)

How long have you been at HFMH? 9 years (plus residency and as a student!)

What do you like about the HFMH EM residency training program?
An opportunity to learn to manage a busy community ER that both provides an opportunity to treat a diverse population of high acuity patients in-house and yet forces you to learn how to utilize your surrounding tertiary care centers. This combination I feel is advantageous when preparing to work in any setting after residency.

What do you think makes for a great EM resident?
A resident who views every single patient as a learning opportunity and every disease process encountered in the clinical realm as the starting point for further self-study on the subject. Self-motivation for improvement to be the best physician you can be for your patients is what I want to see out of my residents.

What do you like best about Metro Detroit/Detroit?
I love so much about Metro Detroit and Michigan overall! I love the diversity of our region, as a place where immigrants have found opportunity and prospered. I also love our architecture, music, sports teams, and cuisine! I like that Metro Detroit has so many great places to own a great home and safe neighborhoods to raise your family.

How long have you been at HFMH? 7 years (including residency)

What do you like about the HFMH EM residency training program?

This is a well-established program in a busy, high-acuity department. The hospital has many of the resources of a tertiary center, but still has a community feel to it. Additionally, the program has awesome outside rotations, like Shock Trauma in Baltimore, PICU in Grand Rapids, Cardiac ICU at HF Detroit, and peds rotations at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Not to mention the relationship between attendings, residents, and staff is unlike anywhere else.

What do you think makes for a great EM resident?

The desire to take ownership of your patients is important, as well as self-motivation, thick skin, and the ability to stay calm and collected, even when a little overwhelmed.

What do you like best about Metro Detroit/Detroit?

Detroit is a fascinating city with so much history. The metro area has a little bit of everything, and traffic to get there really isn’t that bad. You’re also not far from some of the amazing things Michigan has to offer – Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Mackinac Island, the UP, or any number of good (or Great) lakes!

Residency Training Program: Henry Ford Macomb Emergency Medicine (Clinton Twp., MI)
How long have you been at HFMH? 11 years (includes residency)

What do you like about the HFMH EM residency training program?
There is a lot of good pathology for a community hospital. There is also a lot of hands-on experience to be obtained that may not be easily available at a larger tertiary center. There is great comradery among the residents and faculty. Many great out rotations including Shock Trauma in Baltimore and PICU in Grand Rapids. Overall, a very solid program to train in.

What do you think makes for a great EM resident?
I always say hard work is not something that can be learned. I always appreciate a resident that works at their utmost capacity and works hard to always improve.

What do you like best about Metro Detroit/Detroit?
I'm a lake person so I love Lake Saint Clair and all the activities surrounding it. Fishing, boating, waterfront dining. Detroit is also a very interesting city with a wide variety of different dining, sporting events, concerts, and shops. However, if you travel about 30 miles north, you'll be farmland where you can paintball, hunt, or buy apple cider and donuts in the fall. The west side of the state and "up north" are also great places to take a visit while you are here.

Residency Training Program: Botsford Hospital (Farmington Hills, MI)

How long have you been at HFMH? 12 years

What do you like about the HFMH EM residency training program?
You will get to do a lot of procedures. Although we have a lot of specialties, as attendings we will be the first to try whatever procedure with you before calling the specialty. I think this makes a big impact on your future job if you have performed most procedures yourself. Our program director is very organized and makes sure that rotations/learning/wellness are all taken care of. And although residency is stressful we take time for wellness that the faculty love to participate in as well! Our residents become family!

What do you think makes for a great EM resident?
Someone whom is calm, punctual, a team player, a forward thinker, great at multitasking, and most of all hardworking

What do you like best about Metro Detroit/Detroit?
Brunch at Townhouse downtown Detroit, strolling Eastern Market on the weekends, dinner at Mable Gray (Oak Park), concerts and Cider Mills!!!!!
